Trees and forests are dynamic, three-dimensional, irregular living systems that interact in complex ways with the physical environment and with human societies. Trees capture our scientific curiosity, account for much of the air and water we depend on to live, provide raw material and jobs wood products industry, make up habitat for scores of fauna and flora. Just as important, trees inspire artists and musicians to great works that move the soul, and give individuals a place of solace and peace. Because any single-discipline effort to understand trees or forests is likely to fail, Evergreen is an ideal place to pursue serious study of forest systems. Conversely, because Evergreen programs have become synonymous with interdisciplinary study, forests and trees are excellent topics for Evergreen education. Indeed, since its inception, the College has had a very special relationship with its own leafy envelop (the 1000-acre campus) and the other majestic forests of the Pacific Northwest. An Evergreen Virtual Forest would further deepen and celebrate this relationship, by bringing together faculty and students from environmental studies, the visual arts, music, and computing.
